This is a pastel pencil portrait of a beautiful black maned lion. They are found in various locations throughout Africa, in Ethiopia, Botswana and Kenya. Scientists have found that manes of male lions grow darker with age and higher testosterone levels, however most male lions will not develop dark manes. Some research has shown that dark maned males are dominant at kills and attract more females.
Measures 38 x 48 cm framed. This painting has a dark wooden frame with a conservation double mat.
I particularly enjoy doing paintings of wildlife, especially African wildlife after visiting safari parks there three years ago. Pastel pencil allows a detailed portrait that seems to come alive as you progress. I really enjoyed painting this stunning male.
